Based in Denver, Colorado, Fleet 61's goal is to develop Hobie sailing within Denver and the Colorado Front Range community for all ages, singles, couples and families. Our Hobie events (regattas (races) and spring and fall parties) are for all sailors, racers & non-racers, to come and enjoy with friends and families. A Hobie regatta carves out a few days of fun in this fast paced world. While the regattas do support racing, they are also very much social events typically offering a dinner, campfire, and tall tales of the day's sailing adventures. Our summer vacation schedules often allow for an extra day before or after a regatta just to enjoy the locale. We sail in Division 5 of the Hobie Class Association which includes the mountain lakes of the Rockies and the prairie lakes of Colorado, Wyoming & Nebraska. Our members come from diverse walks of life from the Denver, Breckenridge, Colorado Springs, Boulder, Northern Colorado, and Western South Dakota. Hobie Cats (catamarans made by Hobie Cat) are known for being more stable and faster than other small sailboats (monohulls) in light to moderate winds. When the wind is up, Hobies become exhilarating reaching speeds of up to 20 knots (25 MPH). It's a bit like having a high horsepower V8 under the hood while most sailboats have the equivalent of a small four-cylinder engine. The Hobie 16, 17, 18, and 20 are currently the boats of choice in Division 5. The Hobie 16, 18, and 20 race with two people, a skipper and a crew, while the Hobie 17 races with just a skipper. The Hobie 16 is the simplest and lightest boat; the 20 is considered the thoroughbred. From a performance perspective, the Hobie 16, 17 and 18 are quite close and the 20 is a bit faster. Regardless of your choice of boat, your races are scored only against the same sized boats. Fleet 61 enjoys helping new members improve their sailing skills as well as challenging the 'old salts' on the water. New members report learning more in just one weekend than in a whole year of sailing by themselves! Come and participate in Hobie sailing.
