OctHobie Fest 2001

Submitted by Max

After a Friday of cold weather and some snow, Saturday October 6 was a sunny and beautiful day.   Aurora Reservoir was the location to be at for light air sailing, brats, beers and bs.  Eight boats hit the water and sailors for another six boats just showed up to lend their support or empty stomach to the day's event.  Even though the park attendance was about non-existent, the rangers made the best of the day and managed to show up and question
every move we made.

Informal sailing/chasing each other dominated the morning prior to the smell of brats on the grill.  Initially, boiling the brats in beer was Ken Olson in his and Deb's camper.  Brian Stober served as the grill master outside.  Kraut, chips, spicy jalapenos and cake rounded out the menu.  Everyone ate plenty but there was a few brats left for late comers.  A very informal race course was established by an un-named (rangers do not need to know) race
committee, that sent sailors by the buoys for diving at the reservoir. Little did the RC know that the diving buoys would actually be used as the race marks.

The start line was between two trees on the southside and a moving committee on the northshore beach.  The 16's and 18's started together cleanly in light air.  Steve Cooley and Judy started slowly but had clean air and lead all boats to the first mark.  Mike Machette and Brian Clarke doubled up to catch Steve but came up just short on their 18, perhaps it was the double brats that slowed them down.  Tom Machette and Kathleen Tracy followed on
Tom's 18 with 'Hot Tub' Tim Pluene coming in right behind them.

The 16's were lead by Konr Beetch (who started approximately 4 minutes late) and overtook Deb Olson by the mark rounding.  Ron Hilton had the boat speed at the end but needed about another 100 yards to overcome Konr and Deb.  Coming in behind them was a disappointed Alan Spanier and Connie Davis.  They said they would have finished earlier but the lecture the rangers gave
them about the diving buoy slowed them down.  Sailing the 16 short-course was Eric and Cynthia Sorenson, they were uncontested on the course.  Opting out to go to a family function (showing up plenty late I'm sure) was Dave Leal.

Leading conversation on the beach was Jan Stover, Valdek and Renata, Vics Durbin, Robb and Karen Sutter, Russ & Carlyle Kanzenbach, Bob Price, Ralph and probably a couple of other people whom I am sorry I cannot remember.

It was a great day for all (including the rangers).  Discussed later in the afternoon was a fleet gathering at Lazertime, Ralph owns the place and would like for everyone to visit.  There is an up and downside to his place...a bowling alley and bar next door.  Watch for details online or via email.
